My Cousin Abe Lincoln
America was still young when Adam
Shipley settled in
Maryland, in the 1600s. His father Hugh Gentleman Shipley had
immigrated to Virginia. Adam Shipley's son, Robert Shipley,
would
become the great-great-grandfather of one of the most famous presidents
of the United States.
Abraham Lincoln and my fourth
great-grandfather are
both descendents of Robert Shipley. Abraham Lincoln stayed in
the
eastern and mid-western United States. My fourth
great-grandfather, Brice Shipley chose to leave his homeland in Iowa,
and followed the Oregon Trail out West.
Even though 14 generations
have passed since
Huge Gentleman Shipley arrived in Virginia in the early 1600s, the
memories of the early Shipleys live on, just as the legacy of president
Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents of the
United States. He studied law school and became a
lawyer.
As president, he helped bring freedom to the slaves.
My cousin Abe Lincoln is my favorite
president. My fourth
great-grandfather, Brice Shipley, and Abraham Lincoln are third cousins
(they have the same second great-grandfather), which makes Abe Lincoln
my third cousin, 6 generations removed.
