Missions Celebration Big Valley Grace -- 2006

Tuesday, August 2, 2005 - Had a nice long chat with great-great aunt Ruth for almost an hour.

Wednesday, August 3, 2005 -- Currently listening to Ceili Rain

Weather is very hot every day now, in the high 90s, and many days have been in the 100s. Our nectarine tree is loaded with so much fruit, that the branches are weighted down, and resting the tarp. Benny and I have been eating some of the fruit, and it is so delicious!! Ben took some nectarines to our neighbors. Home with no job assignment today. Plan on fixing the front brakes this evening, when the temperature cools down a bit.

Saturday, August 6, 2005 -- Dara went to the all-nighter at Nexus. Once every month the kids spend the entire night at Nexus from midnight until 10:00 a.m. playing on the computers.

Sunday, August 7, 2005 -- Took my van to Tim's in the morning, so he could replace the brakes. Benny played with his bionicles and Tim's cats while he was waiting. Tim fell through a roof while he was working on a home. He was lucky and didn't brake anything! Picked more nectarines from our tree, and gave some to several neighbors.

Sunday/Tuesday, August 7-9, 2005 -- Benjamin started the After School Program on Monday, August 8. He really likes the program! Mike left for the circuit on Tuesday, first stop Napa, then Oregon, and on to Nebraska ..... Spoke with cousin Harlan Barekman. He is almost 80 years old now, and still doing fine. Harlan lives near the corner of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. Harlan told me that our cousin who went to Germany had called him. Another lady who is working on family history research also called Harlan.

Saturday, August 13, 2005 -- This morning Benny and daddy went on another birding hike with the Audubon Club, to the sewer ponds near Patterson. There were nine people in our group. Here is a list of the birds that were identified by our group (by sight or sound): great white egret (two of them sitting in the top of a large tree!), blackbird, swallows (barn and tree?), white-faced ibis, black-necked stilt, yellow-leg, Canada geese, Wilson's phalerope, red-necked phalerope, killdeer, least sandpiper, western sandpiper, caspian tern, forster's tern, American white pelican, snowy egret, great blue heron, ruddy duck, American avocet, double-crested comorant, eared grebe, blackheaded grosebeak, spotted towee, bushtit, house wren, California quail, nutall's woodpecker, mocking bird, red-tail hawk, blue grosebeak, loggerhead shrike, California gull, ring-billed gull, black-bellied plover.

Monday, August 15, 2005 -- Working on my new Birding Home Page. Today it has been overcast most of the day. Last night somebody crashed into the left rear taillight on my van. I had to tape it together, until I can find a replacement. The pieces fit together pretty good! I felt a few drops of rain this morning! Quite unusual for August. Haven't even turned on the air-conditioner yet, and it's nearly 4:00.

Monday/Friday, August 22/September 2, 2005 -- Started a two week assignment teaching Physics in junior high. This assignment was challenging, but was worth the experience. I had to begin the assignment from the very first day of school. The staff members were very supportive.

Saturday, August 20, 2005 -- Went to church at Big Valley Grace. After church, we went to Noah's bbq. Dara went to a LAN party afterwards.

Saturday, August 27, 2005 -- Went to the 1861 Back To School Night at the old Columbia school house, the oldest school of its kind in California. The school sits atop the hill at the end of Main street. There were lots of fun games, the kind of games that children would have played in the 1800s. Dara and Ben had lots of fun blowing bubbles the way people did over 100 years ago. Dara made some very large bubbles. Here are some pictures of the 1861 Back To School Night:

Dara and Ben got to try the old-fashioned ice-cream. They had mock classes inside the school house, including the dunce cap, which Dara got to wear! I met and visited with three elderly women who went to school at the old Columbia school house. They told of how they moved classes outside into tents, because the school house was being repaired. They graduated from the school sometime in the 1930s.
